Really Local Weather by Shawn Ellenberg

Writer's picture: Greene County LibraryGreene County Library

Have you ever been at home and gotten the weather on your TV, your phone or using Alexa, Google or Siri and been told it was raining, but when you looked outside the sun was shining?

When you get the weather for Greene County, you are really getting the weather from the Greene County Regional Airport. The National Weather Service uses the weather instruments at our local airport for the entire county’s weather.

The weather at the airport often isn’t the weather at the lake or in Union Point, Siloam, or White Plains. The sun can be shining in Woodville while rain is falling in Veazey.

If you really want to know what is going on in your own yard then you need some weather station gear of your own.

The simplest solution is to get an indoor/outdoor thermometer (around $35) and put up a rain gauge ($5). There are many different types in many different prices ranges. This simple setup won’t give you wind speed or direction and you have to remember to record the amount of rain and empty your rain gauge. However, It will tell you how hot/cold it is outside and help you can keep track of how much rain you get.

If you want wind speed/wind direction, rainfall, UV and solar radiation measurements then you need a home weather station (around $150-$200). This option requires you to mount a monitor station on a pole in your yard and it will wirelessly transmit your weather conditions every few seconds to a display in your home. You don’t have to empty a rain gauge and it will record your rainfall daily, weekly, monthly and some even up to a year.

The neat feature of these home weather stations is their ability to be linked easily to the internet. If you visit Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) and search on your zip code you will find all your local weather stations. A search in Greene County finds a number of weather stations on-line and in different parts of the county. One of the great features of www.wunderground.com is that it logs your local conditions and you can run reports that tell you the amount of rain received over a custom period of time.
