GCL Teen Advisory Group is off to a Great Start!

It’s a fresh new year and the library’s Teen Advisory Group, or TAG, has been hard at work planning fun new activities for teens between the ages of 13 and 17. The library is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of teens who are excited about volunteering and making their library a more teen-friendly place to hang out.

The PageGazers Teen Book Club was held on Wednesday, January 12. Students discussed the book of choice: One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus.

Each person made a guess at every character in the book and couldn’t come up with exactly how the ending could be possible. This book is highly recommended to any murder mystery lover. The book club also provided a great opportunity to invite new students to participate in the discussion, even though they had not read the book. TAG also provides students with an opportunity to gain volunteer hours by assisting during library events.

That is just the beginning of what TAG has planned for teen events in 2022. TAG members get excited about planning events and get to know each other by working side by side to make their events fun to attend. In December, all members of the group were active in volunteering with library projects and events such as the Holiday Show with Barry Mitchell. While volunteering at the library, these students are able to take on leadership roles and gain team-building skills that can be used in any career field. Meetings are held monthly and members discuss details on how to create events that will encourage others to take advantage of the library’s many valuable resources. If any students between the ages of 13 and 17 are interested in joining the Teen Advisory Group, the application link is provided here: https://forms.gle/s9ADbmFQMZzWUnPt7

Call the library at 706-453-7276 for more details or email Ms. Abby.

TAG has a big hand in choosing all of the details of teen library events and programs. Members are usually dedicated and hard at work in between meetings, communicating with each other on how to spruce up their teen display and help spread the word about any upcoming events.

The PageGazers are scheduled to have their next book club session in February and will be reading "War Horse" by Michael Morpurgo:

In 1914, Joey, a beautiful bay-red foal with a distinctive cross on his nose, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges toward the enemy, witnessing the horror of the battles in France. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him and he is able to find warmth and hope. But his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he left behind. Will he ever see his true master again? (from Goodreads.com)

At Greene County Library, we strive to provide engaging and educational programming for children of all ages and abilities. We are working around the clock to find ideas for activities that will encourage children to enjoy reading. The Library could always use volunteers to help assist during activities and events, so if that sounds like something you would be interested in, please be sure to stop by the library to fill out an application to become a Friend of the Library.

Next month, TAG will celebrate Library Lover's Month by creating a "Blind Date with a Book" display, where guests can choose a "date" with some of TAG members' favorite book recommendations. TAG will also be dressing up as their favorite book characters and dropping by the library. Can you guess who they love?
