Did you know that the National Center for Home Food Preservation is located and run by the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Georgia? Yep…the National Center is located in Athens, GA!

In 2000, the United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Services picked UGA and Alabama A&M University to be the primary institutions to host the National Center. Over the past 20 years, they have published many books, booklets, videos and DVD detailing safe and practical food preservation techniques and methods.
The National Center’s website is located at https://nchfp.uga.edu/index.html and it contains information and resources on every type of food preservation from canning to curing and smoking. If you ever wondered how to freeze brussels sprouts, make apple jelly, or how to make turkey jerky…their website has all the details.
And now due to COVID restrictions, UGA is offering virtual classes via Zoom.
The UGA Extension Service website has a list of upcoming Home Food Preservation courses available. Go to https://extension.uga.edu/topic-areas/food-health/food-preservation.html and look for their upcoming events.

You can also contact the Greene County Extension Office by calling 706-453-2083 or visiting their website at https://extension.uga.edu/county-offices/greene.html.
UGA’s book on preserving, So Easy to Preserve, is available through the Greene County Library. And, don’t forget that Greene County Library has several books on canning and preserving foods. In addition, there are several hundred books on food preservation available through PINES.
So, stop throwing out all those cucumbers and make some pickles of your own, learn how to store onions, make your own bacon or jerky and maybe give your homemade jelly as gifts this holiday season.
