Book Review: The 49th Mystic (Ted Dekker) from Abby Boatfield

"Some say the great mystery of how one can live in two worlds at once died with Thomas Hunter many years ago. Still others that the gateway to that greater reality was and is only the stuff of dreams. When a procedure meant to restore Rachelle's sight goes awry, she begins to dream of another world so real that she wonders if Earth might only be a dream experienced when she falls asleep in that reality. Who is a simple blind girl to have such strange and fantastic dreams?" (Goodreads.com)

The 49th Mystic is an incredible story of two worlds and one girl who is chosen as the key to it all. Rachelle (similar to the author's daughter's name) is a young girl who is blind from birth in one world and lives with her father. She undergoes a serious surgery and while asleep, experiences a world she's never seen before. In this "dream" world, she is told that her presence means so much to the people and she is introduced to the character from the previous series. We are given various character perspectives but what is most intriguing to me is that in one world, this child is blind and life is great but in a another world where she can see vividly, circumstances are not so fortunate.

From the very first chapter, I could not put it down. I was very excited to know that it followed a series that I had already read. Many patrons have asked what I recommend and I always start with Ted Dekker. He can paint a mental picture and tie it all together in the story. His characters are so unique and exciting, I can't get them out of my head when I finish. This book is the first in the "Beyond the Circle" series. Just the thought of how the main character, Rachelle, had to fight in both worlds made an impact and helped me connect with the character throughout the story.

This book is beautifully written and follows another series called "The Circle", also written by Ted Dekker. He has written other great books such as Boneman's Daughters, Blink, A.D. 33 and more! You can find other series by Ted Dekker at our library or place holds from our member libraries to read these in correct sequence. Download the audio book with RB Digital for listening on the go! I highly recommend this book and the author to anyone who enjoy fantasy or spirituality genres.

Rise of the mystics: Beyond the Circle Book 2

Some say the great mystery of how one can live in two worlds at once died with Thomas Hunter many years ago. Still others that the gateway to that greater reality was and is only the stuff of dreams. They are all wrong. Rachelle Matthews, who grew up in the small town of Eden, Utah, discovered just how wrong when she dreamed and awoke in another world. There she learned that she was the 49th Mystic, the prophesied one, tasked with finding five ancient seals before powerful enemies destroy her. If Rachelle succeeds in her quest, peace will reign. If she fails, the world will forever be locked in darkness.
